It's true that Flipboard won't be for everyone, especially those who enjoy watching the "stream" of info (though that is possible in the app if you select the right hypertext). So maybe this definition of "friend" is more of a process than a fait accomplis. It is becoming ever more true, well at least ever more apparent, that social networks are the mechanism by which the Internet is organised.

Heh. I read this on flipboard.
Although, I have found it less useful for twitter and Facebook, mainly because of what you say. I use flipboard for my google reader stuff, as it presents it nicely. However I've found with twitter and Facebook, because it is more concerned with the content, as you say, you lose the context. I like to view my Facebook and twijtter streams in order, and I like to see who is saying or linking stuff before I look at it. You kind of lose that in flipboard. Some stuff is in a stream, but the "interesting" is pulled out magazine style, and loses the "stream" aspect of it.
I guess it all comes down to the fact that different people use these media for different things. Whenever someone says "that's not what twitter is for" I always translate it in my head to "that's not how I use twitter".
These things are all about connecting to other people who want to use the medium in the same way that you do.
